Ethanol Fireplace FAQs
Ethanol Fireplace FAQs and How-Tos
ARE ETHANOL FIREPLACES SAFE TO USE INDOORS?
Yes. Most of the ethanol fireplaces can be used anywhere indoors as long as the wall models are mounted according to directions. Floor and stand models are safe to place on carpeting. All models should be positioned at least 3′ from any flammable materials.
CAN I PUT A FLAT TV ABOVE AN ETHANOL FIREPLACE?
Yes, many of our fireplaces are safe to use with flat TV screens. You need to check whether your fire is "closed" at the top to assess suitability. Some new wall-hanging units are open at the top and have a glass panel at the front. They are NOT suitable to be put underneath TV because all the heat goes up, so it would damage your TV. If your distance between the fireplace and the TV is fairly small, you may recess either the fireplace (lining the top of the recess with a solid fireproof material) or the TV, making at the same time a sort of a heat absorbing "shelf" between the fire and the TV.
ARE THERE ANY LEGAL REQUIREMENTS OR BUILDING REGULATIONS REGARDING BIO-ETHANOL FIREPLACES?
There are no legal or other regulations from the government bodies or elsewhere for decorative fireplaces that run on alcohol. The fireplaces qualify under burning candles category in legal fire regulations. Our products are laboratory tested and we have never been notified within the final report that in order for these products to be installed indoors one would have to (or that it would be advisable to) install any additional ventilation system. Nevertheless, Ethanol Fireplaces are to be used - above all - with common sense, so the flame should never be left unattended and the only ventilation you should have in the room with an ethanol-run fireplace is a window, which you can open if it gets too hot.
WHAT ARE THE EMISSIONS OF ETHANOL FIREPLACES?
Emission is composed almost completely of water vapor and CO2 (carbon dioxide); the amount of CO2 emission from Ethanol Flame is comparable to that of two medium-sized candles. The other components emitted are negligible in quantity well under any limits. The other hazardous substances of combustion such as monoxide, stockoxide and aldehyde are not released until a combustion temperature of 700°C; the temperature of the bio fireplaces is under 400°C.
WILL AN ETHANOL FIREPLACE GIVE OFF HEAT?
While the flame provided by burning the liquid bio-ethanol fuel for fireplaces is decorative and beautiful, it also is efficient in providing heat. Due to the ventless nature of the fireplaces themselves, no heat is lost up the flue or vent. Depending upon the size of the fireplace and opening of the fuel tray, it will produce up to 13,000 BTU or 3.5Kw/H of heating energy. This is enough energy to heat approximately 375 sq.ft. of living space.
ARE THE ETHANOL FIRE EMISSIONS HARMFUL TO HUMANS OR PETS?
Ethanol (Bio-Ethanol) Fuel burns clean without emitting any harmful toxins into the air, with only harmless water vapor produced as a byproduct and a small amount of Carbon Dioxide. Make sure you ONLY use liquid bio-ethanol fuel for fireplaces, as any other kind of fuel can emit harmful toxins or be unsafe.
WHAT KIND OF WALLS CAN I MOUNT MY ETHANOL FIREPLACE ON?
For the wall mount models, only mount them on a sturdy, flat, vertical wall surface. You can mount it against brick, drywall, stone, tile, and wallpapered walls. Do not mount it on any wall with a fabric or cloth covering. Make sure the provided spacers are screwed onto the back side of the fireplace as directed so that the fireplace is not directly against the wall.
CAN I RECESS MY WALL MOUNT ETHANOL FIREPLACE INTO A WALL?
You purchased an ethanol fireplace that is specified as wall mounted only, you can not recess it into a wall as it does get hot and it needs to allow air to flow around all sides including the back side.
WHAT KIND OF FUEL SHOULD I USE FOR MY ETHANOL FIREPLACE?
Make sure you only use specifically made liquid bio-ethanol fuel for fireplaces, as any other kind of fuel can emit harmful toxins or be unsafe. NEVER USE BIO-ETHANOL FUEL FOR CARS OR ANY FUEL NOT INTENDED FOR VENTLESS FIREPLACES.
HOW MUCH FUEL TO ADD TO ETHANOL FIREPLACE OR BURNER?
There is only one rule: NEVER overfill your fuel reservoir. NEVER fill fuel reservoir more than ¾ full.
HOW DO I ADD FUEL TO MY ETHANOL FIREPLACE?
NEVER add fuel to a fireplace that is already burning or hot. Carefully pour the fuel directly into the fuel tray using a funnel or other pouring device. Do not use a funnel you will later use with food or liquids you will drink.
- DO NOT allow children to refuel the Fireplace
- If fuel spills clean up immediately and thoroughly. Fuel spilled on a non-porous or absorbent surface will eventually evaporate
- DO NOT OVERFILL. Only fill the fuel tray ¾ full before lighting.
HOW DO I LIGHT THE FUEL IN MY ETHANOL FIREPLACE?
Use a long match or long/wand lighter to light the fuel. Because a “Flash” is possible when lighting a fire, keep your face away from the burner. Unlit fuel can give off some fumes which are combustible, so it is best to light fire immediately after filling the fireplace fuel tank.
HOW DO I EXTINGUISH THE FIRE IN MY ETHANOL FIREPLACE?
All fireplaces have a fuel tray with a lid to cover the opening and a separate handle. Use the provided handle to close the lid to the fuel tray to “snuff” or extinguish the fire. By closing the lid, you eliminate the supply of oxygen which extinguishes the flame.
HOW DO I CONTROL THE HEAT AND/OR FLAME IN MY ETHANOL FIREPLACE?
The larger the opening of the lid, the more oxygen mixes with the flame and creates a larger flame, thus producing more heat. To adjust the size of the flame and heat production, adjust or dampen the lid.
MY FUEL TRAY (BURNER) CAME WITH A WHITE CLOTH INSIDE OF IT. WHAT IS THIS AND SHOULD IT BE KEPT OR THROWN OUT?
The white cloth inside some fuel tray (burner) models is a nonflammable fiber that has shown to create a better dancing flame more evenly across the opening. It is not required to be used and you can still use your fireplace without it. However if you do use it, make sure it does not cover the small holes inside the top of the fuel tray as they are needed to supply oxygen to the fuel.
I RECEIVED MY ETHANOL FIREPLACE BUT I HAVE NOT YET RECEIVED MY FUEL. WHEN WILL I RECEIVE MY FUEL?
The Fuel ships from a different location than the fireplaces and because it is flammable can never travel by air, therefore delivery times may vary by a few days.
HOW SHOULD I CARE FOR AND CLEAN MY STAINLESS STEEL ETHANOL FIREPLACE?
You can easily clean your stainless steel fireplace by using a soft clothes, mild soap and warm water or an ordinary standard stainless steel spray cleaner found in your local supermarket or hardware store along with a soft cloth to wipe it down. If you have and choose to remove discoloration of the fuel tray and lid, we recommend removing the fuel tray from the fireplace and use a paste or cream like stainless steel cleaner and a soft cloth to rub and buff it clean.
DO THE FLAMES OR HEAT CAUSE ANY DISCOLORATION OF THE STAINLESS STEEL OF MY ETHANOL FIREPLACE?
The heat produced by the fire can cause some discoloration to the fuel tray and lid. Extended and constant use of your fireplace may lead to slight tarnishing and discoloration of the fireplace itself but can easily be cleaned off. See below if cleaning and care instructions.
CAN YOU ADD FIRE GLASS TO THE FLOOR MODEL ETHANOL FIREPLACE?
Yes, you can add fire glass to any ethanol fireplace. Just make sure that it is placed around the burner and doesn't fall into the burner.
WHAT IS THE LARGEST ETHANOL FIREPLACE FOR MY ROOM?
To calculate the maximum size of ethanol fireplace for you room, you first need to figure our how many cubic feet your room is: simply multiply room length by width and by hight. Ethanol fireplaces need to have 200 cubic feet per each 1000 BTUs they produce. So, for example, if you have a 1200 cubic feet room, the largest ethanol fireplace for this room would be the one that produces 6000 BTUs (1200/200 x 1000).
